While universities play a critical role in shaping and preparing young people for employment, they also have a bigger purpose. University education is meant to prepare young people to face the challenges that life throws their way. One such challenge is earning a living. As the nature of work changes, universities must prepare young people to find ways to innovate, challenge assumptions, and problem solve.
The Indian education system is comprised of universities and colleges. Over the past decade, the system has grown rapidly, adding 20,000 colleges and eight million students. Today, the country has over 35,000 colleges and 800 universities. The National Institute of Research and Development (NIRF) ranks all of the higher education institutions in India, based on academic excellence, faculty, industry interaction, and infrastructure.
Governance at Indian universities is often complex and demands clear leadership and decision-making. Most universities in India have hierarchical structures with an executive council and academic boards that have scant knowledge of the needs of their departments. Additionally, graduate schools offer more focused academic programs, such as master’s degrees, which typically take two to three years to complete. In addition, most large universities offer post-graduate study, leading to doctorates.
In addition to offering degree programs, Indian colleges and universities also offer postgraduate and graduate diplomas. Some universities also offer distance learning programs, as well as flexibility with class times. Some colleges are autonomous, while others are affiliated with a university. The two different types of institutions will continue to compete with each other in the future. As competition increases, more choices will emerge for students.
Making a choice of which college or university to join is not always easy. Students want to make sure that they make the best decision. It’s a big decision and one that will affect the rest of your life. The problem is that there are a lot of different factors and many different opinions about what’s the best place to go.
